Neil McCann blasts BBC questioning as Rangers hero explains 'disrespectful' line that left him bristling

Neil McCann has issued a staunch defence of Hamilton boss Brian Rice after being left angry by a line of question aimed at him on Sportsound.

The outspoken pundit wasn't happy with presenter Jonathan Sutherland when he quizzed Rice over his future at Accies after their heavy defeat to League Two side Annan Athletic in midweek.

Rice was asked whether he considered quitting the club after heavy criticism from Hamilton fans following the shock defeat in the Betfred Cup.

But McCann wasn't impressed by how he was treated and insists Rice deserves more respect than what he got, as he praised him for his bravery in how he plays with Hamilton.

The former Rangers star was quizzed over his defence of Rice and he was clearly still frustrated by it as he told Sportsound host Richard Gordon: "I was quite irked, shall we say, at the question Brian would have had to have fielded.

"I felt it was quite disprectful. I just thought it was poor. It's generally quite poor towards any professional manager.

"You throw into the mix how early we are in the season, then you throw into the mix a guy like Brian Rice who stands up there every week regardless of results and is brave and continually telling his players to be brave.

"They're always underdogs, they're nearly always everyone's favourites to be relegated but they play with a freedom, regardless of the pressure he is feeling as a manager of Hamilton who are always flirting with relegation.

"He gets a lot of strength and support from the board. I made the point in the game against Hibs that Hamilton were awful. Awful.

"And yet he didn't just roll over and surrender. He continued to let the boys play, a few young boys in the team, he went for it and could have taken an absolute skelping but he went for it and got himself back in the game.

"He said himself he's unhappy with the performance and the result and as a manager, I've suffered one of those games myself with an embarrassing result.

"I say embarrassing and it's not to disrespect the opposition because you should be winning those games as a Premiership manager. "
