Neil Lennon takes aim at Leigh Griffiths after defeat to St Mirren leaves Celtic in disarray

Celtic boss Neil Lennon has hammered striker Leigh Griffiths after the Parkhead side’s home humiliation to St Mirren.

The 30-year-old scored in the midweek win over Hamilton Accies, but was unable to find the net as Celtic’s chaotic season took another demeaning turn courtesy of goals from Kristian Dennis and Ilkay Durmus.

Defender Shane Duffy was at fault for The Buddies’ second, completely losing the flight of the ball and allowing the Saints winger to run in and restore the Paisley side’s advantage after Odsonne Edouard’s equaliser.

But Griffiths was hauled off at half-time in reaction to what Lennon deemed a lacklustre display, replacing him with Australian midfielder Tom Rogic.

Swiss forward Albian Ajeti was introduced in the second half, but teammate Patryk Klimala was forced to sit and watch the entire 90 minutes from the sidelines as Celtic toiled and probed without success.

Celtic are now 23 points behind Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Defeat leaves Lennon on the brink, with his immediate future now in doubt following the announcement chief executive Peter Lawwell would be standing down at the end of the season.

But the Celtic boss took aim at Griffiths in his post-match interview with BBC Scotland after previously highlighting the Scotland international’s lack of fitness before the turn of the year.

And he highlighted the striker - who scored in the club’s Scottish Cup win over Hearts in December - as one of the club’s underperforming stars.

He told the broadcaster: "I gave Ajeti half an hour today. You could look at Leigh and his contribution as well.

"It's not just about the players who have come in it's about some of the players who have been here for a while and just haven't performed."
