Neil Lennon sees former Rangers rival set to replace him as Omonia move fast

Former Rangers star Shota Aveladze could replace Celtic legend Neil Lennon at Omonia Nicosia after reports claimed that he had already had an interview with the club.

Lennon, who was appointed at the Cypriot club back in March - just over a year after his departure from Celtic - started off on the right foot by winning the national cup, this qualifying for the Europa League. Pitted against Real Sociedad and Manchester United, fans of the capital city side could dare to dream as they took on two of Europe's powerhouses.

But despite almost masterminding a draw away at United, with Scott McTominay's 92nd-minute goal being the difference, alongside a 2-3 home loss to the Red Devils and a 2-1 away loss to Sociedad, Lennon has been relieved of his duties over a series of underwhelming performances in the Cypriot top-flight - with Arveladze tipped to replace him.

Media outlets on the Mediterranean island have suggested that the Rangers legend, who scored 57 goals in 132 appearances in his time at Ibrox, has already been interviewed by the club after being sacked by Hull earlier in the month.

Of course, his appointment would cost Omonia nothing as they wouldn't have to pay compensation, although they are currently in the process of sorting out a package with Lennon after terminating his contract early. Arveladze lasted just 30 games with Hull having taken over back in January, winning nine of his clashes - though leaving the Tigers just one point clear of relegation, he was sacked.

Omonia released a statement thanking Lennon for his time upon his sacking last week.

"We inform you that we have agreed with Mr. Neil Lennon to stop our collaboration," their statement read.

"Mr. Lennon took over the technical leadership of our team last March, at a difficult time and managed to lead us to winning the cup and then to the historic qualification against KAA Gent and our entry into the UEFA Europa League groups, where we came close to historic results against Real Sociedad and Manchester United.

"Unfortunately, the ongoing competitive instability and the significant losses of points in the championship, are the main reasons that made us decide to end our partnership. Mr. Lennon has written his name in the history of Omonia and deserves the respect and recognition of all of us. Our paths separate, but the memories of our collaboration will unite us forever.

"We sincerely thank Mr. Lennon for his contribution and wish him every success in his future career."
