Neil Lennon offers Celtic v Motherwell fan return update as test event is discussed with government

Neil Lennon says Celtic are in talks with the Scottish Government about allowing some supporters into next weekend's match against Motherwell.

The Parkhead club want the fixture to be used as a test event, with a limited crowd allowed into the stadium to watch the match a week on Sunday.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has already said that a small number of fans might be allowed to return to games from September 14 providing we don't see a spike in the COVID-19 figures.

Lennon said today that everyone at Celtic misses the support of their fans 'terribly' and they hope they'll be able see some of them inside the stadium for a test event next weekend.

He said: "That would be fantastic. The club are collaborating with the government to try and make this happen, and later on down the line open the gates to more, so it would be brilliant.

"It's great having football back but there's obviously that huge element which is missing, and it's a huge element that we all want back.

"From the players' experience it absolutely would [make a difference]. A little bit of noise in there and a little bit of atmosphere. We miss out supporters terribly because they bring so much noise and colour to the game."

He added: "I imagine it will be a significantly low number coming in and the protocols around the stadiums are watertight."

Celtic travel to Tannadice to face Dundee United in the Scottish Premiership tomorrow (Friday). We'll have all the latest updates from the match right here on Glasgow Live .
