Neil Lennon makes Celtic sacking claim if he endured Steven Gerrard's Rangers barren run

Neil Lennon reckons he’d have been sacked if he’d endured two trophyless seasons like Old Firm rival Steven Gerrard.

The Rangers gaffer has failed to land silverware in his time in charge at Ibrox and is under huge pressure to deliver next season and stop Celtic’s 10-in-a-row.

Gerrard will become only the third manager in Old Firm history to start a third campaign after finishing his first two seasons empty-handed.

The last was Liam Brady 27 years ago who lasted only a few months into a third term at Celtic.

Liverpool and
England icon
Gerrard is in his first gaffer’s job and signed a new deal last season to keep him at Ibrox until 2024.

Lennon was interviewed by former Hoops team-mate Chris Sutton for a BT Sport review of the
historic title
trail that saw Celts awarded a ninth consecutive
league crown.

Sutton asked if Lennon thought he’d still be in the hotseat if he’d suffered two trophyless seasons.

Lennon said: “Probably not, such is the nature in Glasgow and the level of expectation.

“There’s been a steady improvement in Rangers.

“They were strong in the first half of the season.

“We were getting pushed and were responding all the time. Then in the second half, we responded even
better to a point where teams around us couldn’t keep up with us and that’s something I don’t take lightly. It takes a certain mentality to do that, to keep winning when
everyone expects you to win .”
