Neil Lennon laments 'forgotten' Celtic success as frustrated boss gives verdict on Hoops 'blank canvas'

Frustrated Neil Lennon feels his Celtic successes have been forgotten amid the furore over how their disastrous title defence panned out.

The Hoops failed to secure what would have been an historic tenth title in a row as Rangers romped to the championship.

Lennon departed the club in February with his assistant John Kennedy taking the reins after poor performances and fan acrimony that included furious protests at Celtic Park in the middle of the pandemic.

And while this season has been a huge disappointment, Lennon points out he secured five trophies in his first 18 months in the role - a record any boss would be proud of.

Asked if that success has been forgotten, Lennon told the BBC: "Yes. Yes. Listen this is the modern age when everyone wants success yesterday.

"They look for the next thing after you have won a trophy so you don't get time to enjoy it or dwell on it.

"But five trophies in 18 months was a pretty good return.

"The last six months were pretty difficult on and off the field. Am I hurt? No. I'm a big boy and I understand that's sometimes part of the job.

"I went in on my own and herded the staff and herded a group of players. That was a huge challenge and one that I embraced and enjoyed immensely."

Eddie Howe has been strongly linked with a move to take over the job and Lennon feels the 43-year-old will have a blank sheet of paper to begin work on after a number of key individuals moved on.

Asked what a new boss might be walking into, Lennon answered: "A club in transition. I have gone. Peter Lawwell the chief executive has gone.

"He was there for 17 years and was a huge presence around the club in a positive way.

"Scott Brown, one of the most successful captains in the history of the club is off to Aberdeen next year and Nick Hammond left this week so there will be a new head of recruitment.

"Whoever goes in will have a blank canvas but the magnitude of the club and the expectations of the supporters mean you have to hit the ground running as soon as you can.

"But whoever goes in it's a great challenge for them and a very exciting period for them as well."
