Neil Lennon insists inherited Celtic backroom team made second spell difficult as he closes door on staying in Scotland

Former Celtic manager Neil Lennon believes his inherited backroom team at the club meant he couldn't manage to the best of his ability.

And he admits he's unlikely to take charge of a Scottish team again as he looks to the future following his Parkhead departure.

The 49-year-old is without a club after leaving the fallen champions at the end of February.

His second spell ended poorly to say the least. A meek surrender of the Premiership title with 10 In A Row on the line, early exits from both cups and a group stage Europa League checkout was not how this season to end all seasons was supposed to go down from a Celtic point of view.

But Lennon still maintains he's got plenty going for him and for sides needing new leadership going into next season.

He's just not sure if managing in Scotland would be possible any more and speaking to the Times, he said: "You get the itch. I love football, I love watching it.

"I think I have a lot to offer if I can get my own staff in. It was difficult going into Celtic without anyone and inheriting a staff.

"It was challenging to make that work and we did. For 18 months it worked perfectly.

"I think it’s always important to have someone with the same sort of philosophies and ideas as you.

" John Kennedy was very, very good but the whole staff side of it was inherited. And I went in at a really, really delicate time after Brendan (Rodgers).

"I’ve had a brilliant time in Glasgow but I want a new challenge.

"I’ve been a mainstay in Scottish football for a long time, since 2000 really.

"I’ve had an amazing time. Very, very successful, but it’s exhausted my avenues in Scotland now I think.

"I’ll be looking for something to stimulate me again. I’m at an interesting point in life, coming up to that marker and then there is another new life ahead."
