Neil Lennon dismisses Celtic tainted title jibes as he insists claim suggests 'cheating'

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has hit back at claims the club's ninth league title in a row is "tainted".

Fans of Glasgow rivals Rangers have suggested the 2019/20 season should have an asterisk next to it in the record books after it was ended early due to the coronavirus crisis in an SPFL board meeting on Monday.

With a 13-point advantage when the leagues were shut down in March, the Hoops held a massive lead over their rivals but theoretically could still have been caught.

But the Celtic boss has dismissed such claims - and remarked that the "tainted title" narrative suggests the club have been up to no good.

And he insists the club wanted to win the Premiership on the park, not least for summer arrivals such as Christopher Jullien, Boli Bolingoli and Jeremy Frimpong who were denied the chance to do that for the first time.

Speaking to Clyde 1 Superscoreboard, he said: “Tainted titles suggests some sort of illegality or some kind of cheating going on.

“We’ve done nothing wrong, we’ve played the games, we’ve played with great discipline, we’ve played with great skill.

“This season was curtailed through no fault of our own.

“The powers that be, the member clubs, said that this was the best way to resolve things if no football was going to be played.

“It’s looking increasingly like it was never going to get played this season.

“Clubs voted on the resolution eventually. I am a football competitor, I want to do it in front of the fans, I want to do it with the players.

“That was taken away from us, like I say that opportunity for the first time guys like Jullien and Bolingoli and Frimpong, they didn’t get the chance to win their first medal in front of the home support which is what we all work for and strive for.

“But there was no way we were going to relinquish anything on the football field, we were very strong and coming on stronger.”
