Neil Lennon denied post Celtic heroics as he goes painfully close to Man United giant killing

Neil Lennon had his Omonia Nicosia side push Manchester United all the way but they have fallen just short in a 3-2 loss.

The former Parkhead manager's side have lost their two opening games in Europa League Group E to FC Sherriff and Real Sociedad, having won just one of their last 26 matches - excluding qualifiers - in major European competition. A huge shock was on the cards against the European giants as Karim Ansarifard scored with the home side's first attempt on goal.

Manchester United had hit their box with a barrage of attacking attempts but Lennon's Nicosia stood firm in front of a packed-out home crowd and left them stunned with a half-time lead. Marcus Rashford rose from the bench to restore parity though and it seemed to shift momentum towards Erik ten Hag's men. Anthony Martial then scored a great solo goal, Rashford adding another before Omonia got one back via Nikolas Panayiotou, but United held on.

Lennon departed his position as Celtic manager last year after failing to lead them to 10 titles in succession, taking control of Omonia earlier this year.

He's since guided the Cypriot club into the second tier group phase within European football after lifting the Cypriot Cup last season.

Back in Glasgow meanwhile, boss Ange Postecoglou is regathering his troops after a 3-1 loss to RB Leipzig in the Champions League on Wednesday.
