Neil Lennon Celtic call must be made now as Barry Ferguson makes Steven Gerrard connection comparison

Celtic need to decide Neil Lennon’s future now to give incoming chief executive Dominic McKay clarity.

Lennon is under severe pressure after Saturday’s Scottish Premiership home defeat to St Mirren, which essentially completely killed off any minute hopes of catching Rangers this season.

It came just days after the announcement that Peter Lawwell would retire at the end of the season, with Scottish Rugby chief operating officer McKay confirmed as his replacement.

He’ll take up his post in June, but there is still plenty to be decided at club before then, chief amongst them whether Lennon will still be in the hot seat by the time McKay arrives.

And former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson insists that call has to be made now while McKay and Lawwell go through the handover process, and not left until the summer for the new man to sort out.

“In terms of the new chief executive coming in and replacing Peter Lawwell,  I imagine the next three months will be a bedding in period,” he told Go Radio.

“Peter will be taking him through some things and he’ll be privy to what’s going to be happening. He;s got to be, because he can't come in in June and decide.

“Decisions have got to be made now.”

As for who should potentially replace Lennon, Ferguson doesn;t believe it necessarily has to be someone with a Celtic background.

He added: “I know people say there needs to be a connection with the club, but Steven Gerrard never had a connection with Rangers.

“The guy who’s the right fit and can handle pressure, he knows players inside out and has a clear way of playing, that’s who I think will get the job.

“It’s got to be clear in the main man’s eyes, and that’s Dermot Desmond.”
