Neil Lennon Celtic call made as Dermot Desmond completes New Year review of manager's position

Dermot Desmond has reportedly given Neil Lennon his backing to see out the season.

The Celtic boss is under pressure after slipping 19 points behind Rangers in the Scottish Premiership and hopes of ten-in-a-row now slim at very best.

Lennon’s position was always set to come under review in the New Year after a tough December left him fighting to save his job.

But a run of wins, including a Scottish Cup final penalty shoot-out victory over Hearts, coupled with a good performance in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Ibrox, has convinced the club’s majority shareholder to keep him on.

The Scottish Sun reports that Desmond saw enough from Celtic at the weekend to convince him that Lennon deserves a chance to at least try and turn things around in the league, and another crack at winning a fifth consecutive Scottish Cup.

The Hoops have three games in hand on Rangers and could cut the gap at the top to ten points if they win them all.

That’s far from certain, although they did rack up six victories on the trot prior to the Old Firm defeat at the weekend.

To try and replicate that sort of form, Lennon has been given the thumbs up to recruit a centre back and a winger this month.

Christopher Jullien has been ruled out until almost the end of the season while James Forrest’s comeback is taking longer than hoped.
