The Celtic stat that shocked Neil Lennon and convinced him Hoops were onto a winner against Kilmarnock

Celtic were forced to be patient in their win over Kilmarnock that kept them three points clear of Rangers at the top of the Premiership on Sunday.

Eamonn Brophy's stunning first half strike threatened to upset the Hoops' perfect start to the season as Angelo Alessio's side defended for their lives to protect their lead.

Odsonne Edouard eventually levelled for the dominant home side a minute before the break.

But Neil Lennon has revealed he was entirely convinced his side would go on to win at the break - after discovering their impressive shots on goal tally at half time.

Lennon said: “It was an absolutely superb performance.

"We deserved so much more from the first half. We came in at half-time and asked guys behind the scenes how many attempts at goals we've had.

"It was 14 - some teams don't get that many in 90 minutes.

"You could see there was a verve and real tempo about our play. The scoreline flattered Kilmarnock at half-time. They had one real chance, if you even want to call it an attack, and a great goal from Brophy.

"The 15-20 minutes after half-time we were absolutely superb."

Celtic were completely dominant against their Ayrshire rivals - enjoying 66 per cent of possession in front of their home fans.

By the end of the game they'd rattled an impressive 21 shots at Killie's goal - 11 of which hit the target.

Lennon added: "I’m getting everything I want from this team at the minute. When teams come to defend, we are working the goalkeeper, creating lots of chances.

“Off the back of a really good performance in Rennes on Thursday night, they have cemented league form with a brilliant display."
