Neil Etheridge's transfer to Birmingham City is 'very advanced' as Cardiff City boss Neil Harris issues transfer update

Neil Etheridge's transfer to Birmingham City is at a "very advanced" stage, Cardiff City manager Neil Harris has revealed.

The Philippines international has been the subject of much transfer interest from around the Championship this summer, with Birmingham one of the interested parties from the opening of the window.

It now looks as though the 30-year-old's transfer to the Midlands club will be announced imminently, with the player having been given permission to skip Thursday's training to head for a medical.

"It's very advanced," Harris said of the deal.

"Neil didn’t train today [Thursday], he was given permission by myself not to train, so that gives you a clue of how advanced it is.

"Until terms are agreed and things are signed, then I'm always wary that there's a lot of speculation, but it is advanced.

"I wouldn’t be surprised to see Neil move to Birmingham in the coming days."

It was always in Harris' plans to trim his three goalkeepers - Alex Smithies, Joe Day and Etheridge - down to two and he admitted it made good business sense for City's 2018/19 Player of the Season to be the one to leave.

Smithies had nailed down that No.1 spot, while Etheridge commands a higher transfer fee than Day, who will now become the Bluebirds' natural No.2.

"There will be a good transfer fee involved, I’m led to believe," he added. "I don't know whether that will be disclosed or not.

"He’s in his last year but he is a good Championship goalkeeper and there will be a decent-sized transfer fee."

The City manager had previously said Cardiff would operate on a one in, one out basis in terms of transfers in the coming weeks.

With Etheridge commanding a decent transfer fee, reported to be in excess of £1m, and his wages off the bill, then, it could make room for another potential incoming.

However, when pressed on that, the manager said he is likely to see where the land lies during the opening weekends of the season before making any more additions.

"It might be a slightly different scenario because it's a goalkeeper," Harris said.

"Does it free up more wages for someone else? They are questions I will be having with the board in the coming weeks.

"It might be a case of having a squad, almost a fully-fit squad, let's see how we start in the first few weeks and first couple of games of the season.

"If I feel like we need to add to the squad, then I'm sure the board will try and be supportive if they can."
