Neil Doncaster in Celtic and Rangers colt teams hint as SPFL chief talks up national team benefit

SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster has hinted that the idea of colt teams in the lower leagues could be put back on the table in future.

Clubs are locked in reconstruction talks after the 2019-20 season was brought to a premature halt with Hearts, Partick Thistle and Stranraer relegated.

Jambos chairman Ann Budge put forward a plan for temporary changes that could not garner the support of clubs.

And Rangers proposed a 14-10-10-18 structure that would see the Ibrox club and Celtic enter B teams into League Two along with Brora Rangers and Kelty Hearts.

That idea has also failed to garner support, with a permanent 14-10-10-10 setup put to an indicative vote instead.

But the head of the SPFL feels the idea may not be dead as he extolled the virtues of an approach that is commonly used in continental Europe.

Doncaster told Sky Sports News: "I think colt teams, B teams, have demonstrably been really successful around Europe and in various leagues.

"The very biggest teams have B teams that then play in the lower divisions and, just talking to my counterparts around Europe, they say that B team structure is fundamental to the success of the national teams.

"It really does help develop young players.

"Playing against hardened professionals in the lower leagues is key for the development of those players.

"It works in those countries, there's traditionally been a resistance to B teams in Scottish football.

"But we're a members' organisation and if it comes to pass that members decide they want to go down that route then that's something we'll accommodate."
