Neil Diamond fans fear he is dead after he trends because of public spirited washing hands video

It’s becoming second nature to think the worst when you see a singer of a certain age is trending on twitter.

Following the sad and sudden death of music legend Kenny Rogers on Saturday, many hearts were a flutter when social media started discussing Neil Diamond.

But fear not, folk and country fans - he is still very much with us.

In fact, the 71-year-old is doing everything in his power to make sure you are still with him after putting together a brilliant COVID-19 version of Sweet Caroline.

Filming a new version of the karaoke favourite, he is handing out informative advice about fighting the coronavirus.

Performing in front of the fire alongside his pet dog, he sings: “I know we’re going through a rough time right now, but I love you, and I think maybe if we sing together we might feel a little bit better.

“Hands, washing hands, reaching out, don’t touch me, I won’t touch you.”

His fans loved it - and were thrilled he is still very much fighting fit.

“Thank you. We needed something to counter the 'Imagine' abomination,” wrote one.

Another tweeted: “Thank you Neil for being a national treasure, and being the breath of fresh air we need in these trying times.”

One fan added: “Love sweet caroline anyway, but, this really made me laugh.”

Music fans are still coming to terms with the death of Rogers, 81, the multiple Grammy winner.

He "passed away peacefully at home from natural causes under the care of hospice and surrounded by his family", his representative said in a statement.

Due to the global COVID-19 emergency, the family "is planning a small private service at this time with a public memorial planned for a later date.”
