Neighbours woke to "smashing glass and screams" after two hit by car

Residents were awoken by the sound of "smashing glass and screams" after a man and a woman were struck by a car in Belfast on Sunday.

Police were called to the scene of the incident at around 7.05am.

Footage has been circulating on social media, which allegedly shows the incident in which the pair were struck by a car, reports Belfast Live.

One resident recalled: "I woke up to the sound of smashing glass. There was a car with its back windscreen smashed.

"By the time I got dressed and came downstairs and out, the woman was lying on the ground unconscious. There was another woman attending to her.

"People were on the phones to the ambulance and everything.

"I don't really know them, but I just hope she's ok."

The same person said that, unfortunately, there had been ongoing disturbances in the area.

"There hasn't been anything that has come to my door, thankfully, but all the police here, the forensic team being here, it's a scary sight," they added.

"I just hope the woman is alright, and I don't know how the guy who was injured is doing."

Another person who lives nearby said they were woken by the commotion.

They described the incident as "a scene of confusion."

One neighbour said: "I hope the woman is ok and this doesn't happen again."

Residents said incidents like this are having knock-on effects on those who want to get away from the trouble.

They said: "It goes quiet, and then something like this happens. It's not good at all.

"There's kids looking out the window early in the morning and seeing that. It's not good for them.

"Everyone wants out of here, but nobody wants to move in, so we can't go anywhere else because no one else would come in here."

One person who has lived in the Ashfield Gardens area for years said it had been on a steady downward spiral.

"Since I moved around here a lot of years ago, there's been like 12 deaths, whether by suicides or overdoses, accidental or whatever - there needs to be something done in this area," they said.

"This is like the forgotten corner of North Belfast.

"I moved from another part of Northern Ireland, and this is like a third-world part of Northern Ireland.

"That's what's causing a lot of the problems in this area, the lack of help and no one acknowledging the problems."

A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, suspicion of aggravated burglary and other related offences on Sunday by police.

Police have urged any witnesses or anyone with video footage of the incident to contact them on 101, quoting reference 505 of 07/08/22.
