Neighbours wake up to crime scene after early-morning stabbing

Neighbours on their way to work were greeted by a police scene following a stabbing in the early hours.

Merseyside Police were called to Southworth Road in Newton-le-Willows at around 4.15am, on Friday, April 14 to reports a man had been stabbed. Paramedics also attended and took a man, in his 30s, to hospital for treatment. An emergency worker was also assaulted at the scene.

Those living nearby reported large numbers of officers close to a petrol station just off Southworth Road at around 10am.

One woman told the ECHO: "I left for work early this morning and the road was filled with police, and a house opposite the petrol station was all taped off. I hope anyone involved was okay."

Police have now arrested a 43-year-old woman on suspicion of Section 18 wounding and assault by beating an emergency worker. She remains in police custody to be questioned.

Another neighbour said: "It was really shocking to see to be honest, because it is usually such a nice area around here and there's never much trouble- especially not to that extent."
