Neighbours viewers 'figure out' why Kylie Minogue barely spoke in finale episode

Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan appeared in the Neighbours finale this week as iconic characters, Scott and Charlene. But the pop-disco-legend, who rocked up in a denim jumpsuit in a nod to her character's mechanic roots, barely said anything on Ramsay Street and viewers reckon they've figured out why.

Kylie, 54, played Charlene Robinson between 1986 and 1988 and was the main character in one of the most-viewed weddings in soap history and she returned for the Australian soap's finale which aired on Friday night, July 29, in an hour-long special after 37 years on our screens.

As they arrived on the street in a Mini in the final episode, Especially for You - their duet as Kylie and Jason - was heard playing on the radio. And when they stopped and pulled up, they remarked on all the for sale signs on the houses.

Declaring they're home, Scott leaned in to kiss Charlene on the head in a sweet moment. "Wow wow wow," Scott said as they stepped out of the car, "This is crazy. We made it eh?" Charlene then declares: "Home sweet home."

However, Charlene's only other audible word in the cameo appearance was when she exclaimed "Harold!" after seeing fan favourite Harold Bishop and Neighbours fans thought they knew the reasons why. The episode, which saw Kylie almost recreate her first Ramsay Street appearance by trying to sneak through an open window, ended with a moving monologue by Susan Kennedy.

One person wrote on Twitter : "Was Kylie's fee per word too high or did she not have much time to rehearse? She barely spoke!"

Another quipped: "Kylie Minogue definitely got paid by the word there didn’t she" followed by a crying laughing emoji.

A third fan said: "Wondering how much Kylie Charged per word for them to literally give her two words to say the whole episode." A fourth viewer commented: "Kylie is clearly far too famous to be expected to learn any lines."

Kylie spoke out earlier this week about the return, saying she was convinced to do it by on-screen hubby, Donovan. She said: “Jason and I are connected anyway, but he wrote me a beautiful email, so eloquent and heartfelt about this being a moment for us to acknowledge and say thanks to the fans."

Donovan added: “We’re very aware of the significance. It’s not lost on us in terms of what this show has given us, the cast, writers, directors, the country, the way it has portrayed Australians around the world, it changed a lot of things for a lot of people – now it’s time to scream about it.”
