Neighbours tell of their shock of suspected shooting in Fawdon

Neighbours have spoke of their shock after a suspected shooting at a house in Newcastle.

Police were called out at 11.31pm on Thursday after reports of the incident on Dykefield Avenue in Fawdon.

At the scene, officers found what they believe to be a bullet lodged in a window frame and have now launched an investigation.

On Friday a police car with two officers remained outside the house and the crime scene was cordoned off.

Residents living nearby say they heard bangs that sounded like gunshots before the police arrived.

One said: “I was up until about 1.30am watching Netflix with my son and saw the police van.

“But at around 11.30pm I was in the kitchen when I heard a loud bang, in fact I think I heard two loud bangs.

“My son said it sounded like a gunshot and I said ‘I hope not’.

“Later I looked out of the window and the police van had arrived. I looked over to the house and saw the police were in the garden and looking at the window frame. They had on what looked like torches on their heads.

“I went to bed and when I got up this morning the house was all cordoned off and a police car was outside.

“It’s pretty quiet around here but it is quite frightening if they were gunshots.”

Another neighbour said: “My partner left the house before me this morning and he text back to say a house was cordoned off and police were there.

“We only live around the corner but didn’t hear anything.

“There are a lot of fireworks that go off around here so people might have thought that’s what it was.

Another resident told ChronicleLive: “All I know is the police have been there all night. They have cordoned off the house and are keeping guard outside, so it must be something serious.”

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 11.31pm yesterday (Thursday), officers received a report that a window of an address on Dykefield Avenue, Fawdon, had been damaged by a suspected firearm.

“Police attended the scene and found a suspected bullet lodged in the window frame. Nobody was injured but an investigation has been launched into the incident.

“Officers remain in the area today to carry out enquiries.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact 101 quoting reference 1201 130220.”

“I suppose not many people know the difference between gunshots and firework bangs.”
