Neighbours team up to make amazing Christmas light display on street

Neighbours in one street in Ilkeston have come together to make an incredible Christmas light display.

Nelson Street has been transformed into a Winter Wonderland by residents who wanted to provide some Christmas cheer while raising money for charity.

Houses have been decked out with lights and festive decorations for the public to enjoy as they walk past, with a tub being left out for anyone who wishes to give their money.

All donations are going towards the Ilkeston food bank, which will provide meals for those who may not be able to afford it this Christmas.

Karen Giddens, 34, who has lived on the street for 11 years, said: "It's just so nice to be a part of this community, everyone is always looking out for each other and are so close.

"This area has a bad reputation - it's often in the news for the wrong reasons, so for something like this to be organised is really special - it's amazing.

"The decorations are fantastic. People absolutely love it, they come and stop and take pictures and videos. We just wanted to cheer people up at the end of a really tough year.

Karen lives in Nelson Street with her husband Matthew, 30, and her children Savannah, 16, Kayden, 14, and Kiara, 11.

Any neighbours who wanted to take part put money into a pot to go towards buying the impressive decorations - one house even boasts a snow machine.

She helped to organise the display and says she has been overwhelmed with the response and people's genorisity.

"It's absolutely amazing," she continued.

"It's really lifted everybody's spirits. We're so pleased with how it has worked out."
