Neighbours tackle suspected car thief to the floor

Bleary eyed neighbours restrained a suspected car thief and held him until police arrived.

Merseyside Police confirmed it is investigating a number of thefts from cars on an estate in Bebington yesterday morning (October 28).

Neighbours had spotted a man acting suspiciously and took matters into their own hands as he appeared to be breaking into a car.

One of the neighbours affected on the Derwent and Kennet Road areas posted on Facebook to warn others.

The post read: "Please check your cars this morning. Several were broken into last night.

"The offender was caught in the act, restrained until police arrived and was arrested at the scene."

The post went on to say the man was apprehended with a bag full of suspected stolen items.

Several neighbours from nearby streets replied confirming their vehicles had been damaged after being broken into .

Police confirmed a number of suspected stolen items were recovered and a 30-year-old man from Moreton was arrested.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm that a 30-year-old man from Moreton was arrested following a number of thefts from cars in Bebington just before 2am this morning (28 October).

"Neighbours had spotted the man acting suspiciously and he was apprehended by them as he appeared breaking into a car.

"Officers attended and a number of what are believed to be stolen items were recovered. Enquiries are ongoing.

"The man was arrested on suspicion of theft and vehicle interference and has been taken to a police station where he will be questioned by detectives."
