Neighbours 'shocked and scared' after shots fired on 'quiet' road

People in Wavertree were 'shocked' to find police surrounding their 'usually quiet' street following an incident on Friday.

At around 11.55am on December 17, Merseyside Police were contacted following reports a gun had been fired in Wellington Road.

Officers surrounded a block of flats and homes on the street and an investigation was launched.

One resident who lives nearby, told the ECHO that she returned home from work at 4pm and saw the cordon in place and "loads of police" officers.

She said it is "usually a nice area" to live in apart from the "usual bickering involving youths" and it is rare something of "this scale" to happen here.

The resident added she was "shocked" and was surprised to see "so many" police officers remaining at the scene at 6pm.

Another woman who lives a little further down the road said the area is "usually quiet" adding that this was "scary" and she was "shocked" to hear what happened.

Merseyside Police confirmed that there were no reports of any injuries or damage to building or vehicles.

One male and two females were arrested on suspicion of possession of a section one firearm and were being questioned by officers.

A police cordon was put in place after a member of the public raised the alarm and house-to-house, CCTV and forensic enquires were carried out, with residents reportedly seeing 'armed police' in the area.

A passer-by told the E CHO she "doesn't know what the world is coming to" while one resident, who was out walking his dog, said he did not hear anything and is "crazy what's been happening" lately.

Chief Inspector Gary O’Rourke said: "We are in the very early stages of an investigation to establish exactly what has taken place. If you were in the area, passing by or live locally, you could help by passing on any CCTV, dashcam or doorbell footage.

"When communities stand strong and pass on information, to us or via other channels, we can make these safer places to live and work, and ensure those who would endanger the public are put behind bars.

"Gun crime in Merseyside has fallen dramatically in the past few years, due in no small part to those people prepared to speak to us, directly or anonymously. However you choose to tell us, please come forward."

The cordon remained in place at 6pm on Friday evening whilst officers were at the scene.

Residents returning home were asked to give their details to officers in order to get into their own homes.

Anyone with information can contact Merseyside Police via @MerPolCC on Twitter or the Merseyside Police Contact Centre on Facebook with reference 375 of 17th December.

Alternatively, information can be passed via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, or via the online form.
