Neighbours make sure Wishaw girl had Halloween to remember before spinal surgery

Neighbours turned out to make sure a Wishaw girl had a Halloween to remember after she missed the big day due to getting spinal surgery.

Davina Stannard’s daughter Emma was left gutted when she was told she would be going into hospital for scoliosis surgery on October 30.

However, that didn’t stop residents of Shand Street coming out and giving Emma a great Halloween a few days earlier.

And that included neighbour Lorna Dalziel who created a spectacular spooky window on the day itself.

Delighted Davina said: “Emma’s favourite time of the year is Halloween. She just loves it.

“We had said to a few neighbours and the family that she would be going in for the operation on October 30 and would be missing Halloween.

“Her birthday was earlier in the month and I had said to the doctor to try and make sure she wasn’t in hospital on that day.

“But when we were told the day of the surgery Emma said she would rather be in hospital for her birthday!

“Everyone turned out for her big night. Lorna’s window was fantastic.

“She drew that by hand. She is so talented.”

After enjoying her early Halloween, 11-year-old Orchard Primary pupil Emma went in for her operation at the Sick Kids Hospital in Edinburgh.

The surgery is to realign and fuse together the curved vertebrae so that they heal into a single, solid bone.

Davina said: “We had been aware of the problem since January but because of Covid the operation was put back.

“The operation will make such a difference for her because she has been in agony.

“After the operation there is four or five days of intense physio in the hospital before a lot of work at home.”
