Neighbours in Gedling describe dramatic moment 'violent' fire ripped through garage

Neighbours have described the moment a "violent" fire ripped through a garage which led to someone being evacuated from their home.

Firefighters from the Carlton and Arnold fire stations were called to Rutland Road in Gedling just before 7.15pm on Tuesday, December 28.

People living in Rutland Road said a section of it was cordoned off while crews worked hard at the scene.

One person was evacuated from the building.

No one was harmed as a result of the incident, Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue confirmed.

The crews used two water tender ladders, a thermal imaging camera, high pressure hose reel and tools to get into the building and bring the blaze under control.

Lynn Stott, who lives in Rutland Road, said: "I live a few houses down from where it happened.

"I just heard a noise, which I think was the fire starting, and dogs barking. I looked to make sure everyone was OK and I saw the fire crews were there and dealing with it."

Another neighbour, who asked not to be named, said: "We went upstairs to see what was going on.

"It was a pretty violent, big fire. We just heard this 'shooshing' noise before it started.

"We went outside to make sure everybody was all right. The fire brigade were here really quickly and it was under control pretty quickly."

Gary Copson, 60, who was out walking his dog, said: "I've seen the damage - it looks pretty bad.

"I'm glad no-one got hurt. It must have been pretty scary for whoever lives there and everyone else, for that matter."

"My son text me and asked what was going on," said another neighbour, who asked not to be named.

"I looked outside and saw all the flashing lights and they had cordoned the road off.

"You never get anything like this around here - it's very quiet."

The owner of the house involved told Nottinghamshire Live it was an electrical fire and that they didn't want to comment further.
