Neighbours host street party in honour of woman who lost her leg earlier this year

A Wishaw woman who lost her leg earlier this year has thanked her neighbours for holding a street party in her honour.

We told you previously how Elizabeth Wilson had to have the life-changing operation in March after months of complications and failed attempts to save it.

After suffering from blood clots for a few years, the leg worsened and Elizabeth had to have multiple operations to try and help get it back to normal.

The clotting would not stop and unfortunately the 46-yaer-old had to have her leg amputated.

Elizabeth (Libby) admitted her health problems had meant she had not been out her house in months.

So, her neighbours in Wishaw’s Woodgreen Court decided to put that right on Saturday with a street party.

Libby told Lanarkshire Live : “It was just what I needed.

"I had been stuck in the house wondering what people would say to me. I won’t feel as self-conscious going out now.

"I don’t think people will realise just how much of a big thing it was for me. This has given me a wee confidence boost.

“Since March, I have only been out of the house to get my COVID vaccine and a hospital appointment so it was so nice to see everyone.

"My family were all blown away by the number of people who were out despite the weather.”

Despite the bad weather, a good group of neighbours enjoyed their day with Wishaw bakers Denholm’s supplying cakes and rolls while the town's Tesco store donated paper plates, crisps, sweets and juice.

Lynn McCormick helped organise the event and was delighted to see neighbours come out to enjoy the day despite the downpours.

She told us: “My husband and I wanted to show Libby that we are here to support her along with many other residents.

“It was a big day for her to come out the house after been stuck in for months.

“The weather was against us but it didn’t stop us from having a fun day.

“So many residents made such a great effort to show support and join in and we all enjoyed chatting, music, food and drinks.

“I’d like to thank everyone for coming and also to the businesses who donated to us on the day.”
