Neighbours heard 'explosions and screams’ coming from house fire

Neighbours heard ‘explosions’ and ‘screams’ as a fire took hold of a family home in New Brighton on Sunday night.

Firefighters were called to a blaze on Gerard Avenue, Wallasey shortly before 8pm on Sunday, April 18.

A plume of black smoke could be seen rising above a residential property in the area a witness described hearing something that sounded like “loads of explosions”.

The neighbour also said they heard what they believed was the sound of a young girl “screaming”.

One witness, who asked not to be named, said: “We just heard loads of explosions. My partner ran round to help and you could hear the daughter screaming to her dad to move away with people saying 'get out'. It was really scary.

“The fire was really loud and you could see black smoke coming from the house.”

Three fire engines attended the scene and one person was assessed by paramedics.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Fire and Rescue, said: “ Firefighters were called to Gerard Avenue, Wallasey, on Sunday, April 18.

“Crews were called shortly before 8pm. Three fire engines attended. On arrival crews found a fire involving a shed attached to the side of the house.

“Crews used a hose reel jet to extinguish the fire. One person was assessed at the scene by paramedics but did not require hospital treatment.

“Firefighters left the scene at 9.10pm.”
