Neighbours hear 'bang' and run to help driver after car crashes into wall

Neighbours heard a "loud bang" and rushed to give a driver first aid after he crashed through a garden wall.

Merseyside Police were called to Bowland Avenue in Childwall at around 7.20pm on Monday, July 10, following reports of a crash. Once officers arrived at the scene they found a blue Ford Fiesta had crashed into the outside garden wall of a home, and into a parked car.

The North West Ambulance Service and fire service were also called to the scene. Police have said a man in his 70s suffered a medical episode at the wheel and was taken to hospital.

Police have not confirmed the man’s condition. Before emergency services arrived a man, who asked not to be named, said he was sat on the couch when he heard a “huge bang” from outside.

He told The ECHO: “I jumped out, looked up and saw what happened. I ran over and there was a few people there so we got the fella out of the car."

It is understood the driver was given CPR at the scene by neighbours before emergency services arrived and took over.

The man added that the couple who live in the house were at home at the time of the crash, but weren't injured.

At the scene this evening police were using a 3D laser scanner to assess the scene and a number of yellow evidence markers were put down behind the car.

In a statement from Merseyside Police a spokesperson said: "We are in the early stages of the investigation and appeal for any witnesses, CCTV and dash camera footage which may assist us.

"Anyone who witnessed the incident, or has any information which could assist the investigation, is asked to call the Matrix Serious Collision Investigation Unit on (0151) 777 5747 or email SCIU@merseyside.police.uk or contact Merseyside Police Contact Centre on Facebook quoting reference 23000620491.

"You can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously, on 0800 555 111."
