Neighbours furious as new flats approved for 'quiet' street of bungalows and cottages

Plans to build a block of apartments in a “quiet neighbourhood” has left residents who have lived there for 30 years furious.

Almost forty people raised their objections to the new apartments on Foxhouse Lane, Maghull, in a petition to Sefton Council.

Liam and Gary Watson demolished the former dormer bungalow at number 81 earlier this year – without planning permission.

Now, plans from the pair to build a two storey building, with five apartments, along with car and cycle parking spaces, a refuse store, and communal amenity space have been approved by Sefton Council.

Some 37 people voiced their objections at a Sefton Council Planning Committee meeting held remotely this afternoon.

Neighbours raised a number of concerns, including congestion, pollution, draining, and “loud parties”.

Part of the petition, endorsed by Cllr Yvonne Sayers, read: “The proposed very large modern building will look totally out of place when set amongst nearby mostly bungalows and cottages.

“There will be privacy issues [due to the height of the building] and a serious loss of light to neighbouring properties.”

But part of a statement from the developers’ agent Roman Sumners said: “This will be a discrete development of excellent design quality and fairly modest scale, in keeping with the local area, and there is simply no reason to suppose that it will result in the chaos inferred by both the petitioner and the ward councillor who has called this in.”

Planning chiefs also said the proposals had been considerably scaled back since objections were raised, and the plans were approved.
