Neighbours forced to wade through water as street floods

Neighbours living on a street in Waterloo were left having to wade through water to leave their homes due to flooding.

Storm Christoph has swept across Merseyside today, bringing with it heavy rain and some localised flooding.

Chris Kobewka, 60, lives on Rimrose Valley Road in Sefton and claimed the flooding in his street was so bad today that the postman had to clamber in through a gap in the fence to deliver the mail.

A drainage issue seemed to be contributing to the problems on Rimrose Valley Road, leaving the road vulnerable to today's downpours.

Chris, who works as an engineer, had three toes removed in an operation last summer and was not allowed to get his foot wet at all, making the flooding a serious barrier to him leaving the house.

Speaking to the ECHO, Chris said he was faced with the choice of wading through the water or getting through the fence to leave his property.

But thankfully for Chris and his partner Margaret Winstanley, 56, Sefton Council has managed to improve the situation today.

Chris claimed he felt “fobbed off” by Sefton Council after complaining for months about the drainage issue.

He said the problem should have been resolved much sooner, but he was happy that the council had resolved the problem today.

A spokesperson for Sefton Council said: “The Council attended the location today to carry out some further jetting which has improved the situation.

“On previous occasions, after the gully had been cleaned, the water was flowing and operational, indicating further jetting was not necessary.

“We have instructed our contractor to carry out a CCTV survey as soon as possible to establish if there is any damage causing these problems.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused and would like to reassure residents that we are continuing to monitor the situation and will review again once investigations have taken place.”

Storm Christoph is set to continue to hit Merseyside, with rain and potential flooding forecast by the Met Office.

The weather organisation currently has a yellow weather warning for rain in place for Merseyside, which lasts until Thursday afternoon.

The yellow warning said: "Spells of prolonged and heavy rain may lead to flooding and disruption to travel in places.

"Homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings.

"Fast flowing or deep floodwater is possible, causing a danger to life.

"Delays or cancellations to train and bus services are possible.

"Spray and flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

"Some communities may be cut off by flooded roads.

"Possible power cuts and loss of other services to some homes and businesses."

Tuesday has seen heavy rain hit Merseyside with flooding occurring at Crosby Marina and other locations.
