Neighbours forced out by salon blaze in Thornhill

Residents had to be evacuated after a blaze in Thornhill.

Seven fire crews were sent to tackle the fire at the Athena Beauty salon in Drumlanrig Street on Tuesday morning.

And police and fire chiefs ordered residents from nearby properties to leave as a precaution.

It is believed that neighbouring properties may have suffered some damage as a result of the incident.

Officials believe the blaze was sparked by an electrical fault.

Proprietor Marie Argue-Haslam had closed the salon three days before the fire due to coronavirus restrictions.

She posted a message on Facebook after the blaze saying: “I just want to say a big thank you to everyone for all of your lovely messages. I am sorry if I haven’t been able to reply yet.

“I am utterly heartbroken. Thank you also to the wonderful firemen and police who put their lives at risk

“It seems my positivity in everything is just lost right now.”

No one was hurt by the fire.

One nearby resident told the Standard: “It was quite a spectacular sight.

“There were lots of appliances and personnel.

“I think the damage went through to the upstairs flat.”

A spokesman for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were alerted at 7.34am on Tuesday to reports of a large fire within a three storey building on Drumlanrig Street, Thornhill.

“Operations control mobilised seven fire appliances to the scene, where firefighters were met by a well developed fire.

“Crews extinguished the fire and left the scene after making the area safe.”

The last firefighters stood down at 8.22am on Wednesday.

A police spokesman added: “Neighbouring properties were evacuated for safety reasons.”
