Neighbours' fear as armed police seen 'chasing two men' in incident in Ashton

Residents in Ashton have spoken about an incident which warranted a large police presence in the area earlier today.

A police helicopter was seen flying above the Ashton and Stalybridge area, while police officers were also seen in attendance on Friday afternoon (August 20).

On Rutland Street, police officers were seen knocking on doors asking for information at lunchtime.

Those in the area at the time said they saw police chase at least two men.

Police have not yet confirmed details of the incident.

One resident told the M.E.N: "I know that there was an incident in Ashton.

"They caught one of them under the bridge. A jumper was found around the corner [on Hall Street].

"The helicopter was out for about half an hour. We just came running out to see what was going on."

Neighbours who spoke to the M.E.N. said the incident kicked off around 12.05pm, before armed police were soon on the scene.

Witnesses say one person was stopped by officers by the railway bridge on Clarence Street.

One Hall Street resident said he was at work when his partner called him to tell him something was going on outside.

"She said she had seen the police helicopter from the back window," he said.

"She went to have a look and she saw a car parked down the bottom of Rutland Street with the back window smashed.

"Next thing, the police were all here, armed police.

"The last thing she said was that she had heard it had gone down towards Ashton town centre, and that there was possibly a crash involved."

Some neighbours told the M.E.N. that they heard the police helicopter and saw a police car parked off Rutland Street, but were unsure what had happened.

One resident said: "It's a bit of a surprise to see something like this here. It's not usually like this.

"You don't often see police officers walking up the street with a gun - there were two.

"They were looking in the field for ages. We were wondering if they had gone down to the railway line."

It is not yet known why police were in attendance in the area.

Greater Manchester Police have been approached for comment.
