Neighbours fans fear show is being axed after Australian channel cut episodes down

Neighbours fans have been fearing that the show could be axed after it was announced it would be slashed down to four episodes.

Australian channel, Channel Ten, announced that it will no longer be airing its usual five episodes.

On the day the fifth episode usually plays, the classic sitcom Friends is airing instead.

A spokesperson explained to TV Tonight : "From July 26, Neighbours will air four nights a week. On Fridays, viewers can laugh along with their favourite Friends."

Neighbours follow the lives of the residents of Ramsay Street and has been on air since 1985.

It will be the first time in the show's long-running history that it hasn't screened the usual five episodes per week.

According to the website, their decision to slash episodes is to make sure the Australian episodes are more in sync with the UK schedule.

Meanwhile, it was previously announced that Channel 5 were cutting episodes of Neighbours and Home and Away from five nights a week to two nights.

They said it was due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This resulted in the UK being months behind Australia, leading to online spoilers for British fans.

A source told Woman's Day that the show could be in trouble as Channel 5 'think the show is stale'.

"Channel 5 aren't happy. They think the show is stale. They're deciding whether to continue the show or not," the insider told the publication.

"I can't stress how much this move shows Neighbours is no longer the powerhouse in the UK that it once was. Many believe this is the beginning of the end".

"It doesn't help that the cast's contracts are also said to be stripped back too - with many of them only being renewed for a few months at a time," they added.

Filming for the series was only paused for a short time during the peak of the coronavirus pandemic but resumed shortly after.

The series' boss Chris Oliver-Taylor explained at the time: “There will be no more than 100 people a day in any area, we’ll implement the four-square-metre rule and the one-and-a-half-metre social distancing rule.”

Neighbours airs on weekdays at 1.45pm and 5.30pm on Channel 5 in the UK and weekdays at 6.30pm on 10 Peach in Australia.
