Hamilton flat 'explosion' sees fire crews race to residential street

Emergency services are currently on the scene at a block of flats in Hamilton following an ‘explosion’ this afternoon.

Residents living in and around Craigburn Street in Eddlewood say police, fire and ambulance are at the scene.

Neighbours have been evacuated from their homes following the incident.

Linda Laird, who lives in the block of flats, said: “We were out at church and on our way back home when we saw police, ambulance and fire brigade.

“My dog Sandy was in the house, she got a real fright. It was chaos when we returned home and we don’t know when we will get back inside our homes.

“We really hope our neighbour is okay. We think it’s got to be a gas explosion.”

Another neighbour, Alex Kirkwood, said: “I’ve stayed here for more than 30 years and we’ve not had any bother before. We will just have to wait and see when we can get back inside our homes.”

Another resident who looks onto the back of the property said: “There is a lot of activity and it seems like there has been some sort of explosion in the house, as the windows have all blown out.”

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “We got called to a report of a house fire at about 1.40pm this afternoon in Craigburn Street.

“One man has been taken to hospital and enquiries are still continuing.”

“Operations Control mobilised two fire engines to the town’s Craigburn Street, where firefighters discovered the fire had extinguished prior to their arrival.

“Crews currently remain on the scene working to assist their emergency service partners.”
