Neighbours describe hearing sirens and smelling smoke as crews tackle serious house fire in Chilwell

Firefighters, police and ambulance crews rushed to the scene of a serious house fire in Chilwell on Sunday (July 10) afternoon. Concerned neighbours described seeing a heavy presence of emergency workers and smelling smoke following reports of the incident in Cator Lane.

Police offices installed a cordon as fire crews tackled the fire, which was reported just after 12:30pm. The cordon stretched From Clumber Avenue to Bramcote Avenue.

A resident of Cater Lane since 1983, who asked to remain anonymous, said: "All I heard was two ambulances, or one was a police car, and I looked and the road was blocked off.

"I didn't see any smoke or anything. Its not very nice to see especially when you don't really know what's happening."

Vicki Slater, who has lived in Cator Lane for more than 20 years, handed out water to the police and fire service working at the scene. She added: "I could smell smoke. It's that ashy smell. The smoke hits you at the back of your throat. Someone could have been in there.

"It's a really nice community and everyone helps each other."

One resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said: "All I've heard are sirens."

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service issued a statement shortly after reports of the incident: "Fire. We are currently in attendance at a serious house fire on Cator Lane, Chilwell.

"Four fire engines and the welfare unit are working to extinguish the fire. Please avoid the area. If you smell or see smoke, keep your windows and doors shut."

Both Nottinghamshire Police and Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue said they would not be providing any further details on Sunday, July 10.
