Neighbours bosses plan storyline shake-up for Aussie soap's 35th birthday

Neighbours has been around for nearly 35 years and bosses are cooking up a major twist in the show's storyline to mark the anniversary.

Australia's longest running soap will celebrate the milestone in March, but it looks like fans will be celebrating alongside them as producer Jason Herbison has hinted that fans can expect "high drama" and "nostalgia".

He said: "The 35th anniversary is by far the biggest event we've ever undertaken.

"Without giving too much away, I can say that we have two major narratives taking place.

"One is warm and nostalgic and the other is high drama."

And fans will be elated to know that the soap's OG's Olympia Valance - who plays Paige Smith - and enise Van Outen - who plays Prue Smith - will be coming back to the show for the special event.

Jason added: "Some returnees come back for a specific event, others get swept up in it organically, which is lots of fun."

But the theme of nostalgia won't stop there, as bosses are set to have other familiar faces return to Ramsay Street.

Jason explained: "There will be more familiar faces returning throughout 2020.

"There is one returning face from the not-too-distant past that I'm particularly excited about. This person has been top of my list to bring back ever since they left."

It comes as just last month Jason Donovan 's daughter Jemma followed in his footsteps by joining the cast of Neighbours.

And he has hinted at a potential comeback on the show for it's 35th anniversary - only if  Kylie Minogue  and  Guy Pearce  do it too.

It seems to be a family tradition for the Donovans as she will be the third member to join the Australian soap after her grandfather Terence also had a brief stint on it.

Jason, 51, played soap character Scott Robinson between 1986 and 1989 and afterwards found international stardom.

He told  The Herald Sun : "I think if an opportunity for a Guy and a Kylie came and we all went on as a team that would create something interesting."

Jemma, who is 19-years-old, will adapt to her new role as Harlow Robinson - a long-lost member of her dad's on-screen family.

Her famous dad is pleased at her new role, admitting it's "an incredible learning curve for any young actor".
