Neighbours applaud as Gerwyn Price arrives back on Valleys street after becoming World Champion

Wales' latest sporting superstar Gerwyn Price returned home this afternoon clutching his trophy after winning the PDC World Darts Championship last night.

Price, from Markham, Blackwood, saw off two-time champ Gary Anderson with a stunning performance, winning the final 7-3.

In the process, he collected £500,000 and shot to the top of the world rankings.

He returned to a humble valleys estate this afternoon and was videoed gathering his trophy from the car as neighbours applauded.

The tweet accompanying the video from Bethan Jones simply read: "The champ is home."

Price's victory completes a remarkable rise to prominence in the sport, having packed in playing rugby less than 10 years ago.

In 2012, he was hooker for Cross Keys when they reached the final of the British and Irish Cup and beat Pontypridd to win the Swalec Cup.

He had spells on the books with the Dragons and Glasgow Warriors before pursuing a career in darts.

His former Cross Keys coach Mark Ring believes he had what it took to reach rugby's Everest.

"In my view he could have been right up there with Ken Owens - and that's saying something because I really rate Ken, probably as the best hooker in the northern hemisphere," says Ring.

"Technically, Gezzy was brilliant. He threw the ball into a lineout on a sixpence, he was a really good scrummager and his work in the loose was outstanding. He had pace to burn.

"He had international class stamped over him as a rugby player, could definitely have gone on to play for Wales and the Lions if he'd perhaps applied himself a little sooner - just like Owens has done.

"I look at some who have played for Wales, made mistakes, and I think of what Gerwyn might have achieved.

"But sometimes you need need a break and it didn't happen in rugby with Gerwyn.

"What he's done in darts has been phenomenal, I've loved watching him. It just shows the natural sporting talent he has."
