Neighbourhood pub is officially the best boozer in Bristol

To say Bristol is home to its fair share of cracking pubs would be an understatement.

You'll find top notch boozers in every area of the city from Bishopsworth to Bradley Stoke, all serving superb ales and stouts from the numerous highly rated breweries based here.

And last night the very finest watering holes around were celebrated at the annual CAMRA Bristol Beer Festival, which is currently taking over Brunel’s Old Station.

The Barley Mow in St Philips, owned by Bristol Beer Factory, prides itself on boasting eight hand pulls and 10 keg lines which serve a huge range of craft beers from Bristol and beyond.

Thanks to its location, beers from esteemed breweries such as Good Chemistry and Moor Beer only need to be wheeled down the road by hand rather than transported by van, and the pub also serves decent grub with its burgers and Sunday roasts in particular going down a treat.

Pub manager Harry Acfield, who took over the reins in September last year having worked there in a less senior role beforehand, was delighted at the win.

Bristol's Thekla is hosting a Prodigy party to celebrate the life of Keith Flint

"We've come runner up in this award three times, including last year, which meant it became a bit of a running joke that we'd never win it," he said.

"So it was a mixture of relief and joy when our name was read out last night.

"I think one of the reasons we've won is down to the fact we're a little out the way, which means people make an effort to come here rather than just stumbling past.

"And of course we've got a great range of beers on offer including some really good local ones, who are able to bring it to us in just two minutes thanks to our location.

Parklife Festival is bringing a one-off party to Bristol to celebrate its 10th anniversary

"We're expecting to be even busier as a result of this and look forward to celebrating with our customers."

The Barton Road boozer recently underwent a refurbishment and hosts a popular pub quiz every Tuesday.

It has a rating of 4.5 / 5 on TripAdvisor and is praised by many for its 'excellent beer selection' and 'beautiful food'.

The Drapers Arms on Gloucester Road scooped runner-up.

What won best beer?

The award for Best Beer at the festival went to New Bristol Brewery for their Irish Cream Stout.

Husband and wife Maria and Noel James, who run the St Paul's brewery, came up with the idea for the beer when they visited Dublin.

They saw people adding Baileys to their pints of Guinness and developed the idea in their own brewery.

Maria said the pair were overjoyed by the win, which they celebrated with a trip to - you guessed it - The Barley Mow.
