Neighbour tackles gunman to the ground following domestic violence incident in Adelaide

Police in the Woodville South street where the incident occurred.

A neighbour has described how he tackled a gunman to the ground who was fleeing a domestic violence incident in Adelaide's north-west this morning.

Emergency services were called to a home in Woodville South just after 6:00am after neighbours reported a domestic violence incident.

Police have alleged the man discharged a firearm inside the house before fleeing the scene.

A woman and child were at home at the time of the incident but were unharmed.

Police said a 28-year-old man from Christie Downs was arrested on a street nearby and taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital with minor injuries.

He is expected to be charged with serious domestic violence offences.

Neighbours reported hearing a gunshot, with one describing what happened after she and her partner were woken up by their dog.

"The dog was barking, and we heard someone running on the roof and we just ran out to see what was going on and there was a guy with a gun," she said.

"So, [my partner] tackled him and then we let him go because it was a bit full on and then the cops arrived."

Police closed off the surrounding streets for more than four hours following the incident this morning.

'He was walking towards me with a gun'

The man who tackled the gunman said he did not really think about how dangerous the situation was before grabbing him.

"He was walking towards me with a gun and I just grabbed him and put him on the ground … it was pretty scary actually," he said.

"He dropped the gun and I tried to pick it up but my neighbour kicked the gun away."

The neighbours said the man then picked up the gun again and walked down the street with it, before police arrived about two minutes later.

Police have appealed to the public to report domestic violence and sounded out a reminder that Public Interim Intervention Orders could be issued for the safety of victims.

"These are immediately enforceable, cover firearms, and may require the accused person to immediately vacate the home address or return items of personal property belonging to the protected person," police said.

"The public are reminded that domestic abuse doesn't just include physical violence, but also encompasses threatening behaviour, damage to property, emotional or psychological harm and denying a person financial, social or personal independence."
