Neighbour avoids injury after "reckless" arson attack in West Belfast

The PSNI are investigating an arson attack that took place in West Belfast in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Officers were informed that a wheelie bin had been set alight and pushed against the door of a flat in the Glasvey Drive area of the city on August 15.

No one was injured as a result of the incident but "significant" damage has been caused to the flat.

Detective Sergeant McCallum said: “Just before 5am, we received a report that a wheelie bin had been pushed against the door of the property and set alight.

“A resident in a neighbouring flat had to leave their address during this incident, and it is fortunate that we are not dealing with any serious injury as a result of this reckless act.

“A significant amount of damage has been caused to the property.

“I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed anything or anyone suspicious in the area in the early hours of this morning, to contact police on 101 quoting reference 224 of 15/08/21.”

A report can also be made using the online reporting form via www.psni.police.uk/makeareport.

Alternatively, information can be provided to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
