Neighbour-attacking mum and pervert who molested sleeping teen spared jail

These are the people who were hauled into courts across Merseyside but walked free.

One court watched the sickening video of a teen who slammed his daughter's puppy to the ground.

Leon Robinson picked up the four-month-old puppy, lifting it above his head, before throwing it down in a drunken rage.

One judge heard the case of a mum who poured a kettle of boiling sugar water over a neighbour during a row in the street.

Chloe Walsh left her victim with facial burns but was spared jail after the court heard she is the primary carer for her two children.

When sentencing, judges and magistrates have to follow a set of guidelines and consider if there's a realistic prospect of rehabilitation, strong personal mitigation and if immediate custody will result in a harmful impact on others.

These circumstances, as well as other considerations, can tip the balance on whether an offender walks free from court or is sent straight to jail.

Read the latest court cases where people were spared jail below.

Leon Robinson

A teen violently attacked his daughter's puppy after buying her it for Christmas.

Leon Robinson was filmed going to his ex's mum's house and shouting before walking inside, picking up the dog and throwing it to the floor.

The 18-year-old breached a non molestation order when he went to the home with an offensive weapon, and was jailed for 22 weeks as a result.

Robinson, of Bell Lane, Sutton Manor, St Helens, admitted causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal in a separate court hearing.

He was handed a 12 month community order and ordered to pay £200 costs and a £95 victim surcharge.

Robinson was also ordered to complete 80 hours of unpaid work and banned from keeping animals for 10 years.

James Haydon

A yob sold two sick puppies to a couple on Facebook, one of which was so poorly it had to be put down.

James Haydon sold the two Cane Corso dogs for a total of £1,800, but after collecting them their new owners realised they were sick.

One puppy was severely underweight, weighing just 1.9 kilograms when it should have weighed between eight and nine kilograms.

The RSPCA later attended the now 22-year-old's home, in Netherton, where officers found 11 dogs and puppies kept in crates where they didn't have access to fresh water.

One dog was kept in a crate so small it was unable to even turn around and others were walking in faeces.

Haydon, now of Island Road, Reading, admitted two counts of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal on September 26, 2019, one count of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal between February 1 and February 5, 2020, and two counts of failing to ensure the needs of the animals were met between August 15 and September 26 2019 and on February 5, 2020, respectively.

He was handed a 12 week sentence suspended for one year and was ordered to complete 30 Rehabilitation Activity Requirements and a Thinking Skills Programme.

He must pay £250 in costs and a £122 victim surcharge and was banned from keeping animals for five years.

Stuart Pearson

A paedophile said he wanted to 'shower romantically' with a 13-year-old girl.

Stuart Pearson asked for a selfie from the girl, but didn't realise he was actually speaking with paedophile hunters.

The 37-year-old asked what he thought was a child what colour her underwear was and asked about body hair.

Pearson, formerly of Liverpool city centre, admitted attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child.

A judge said he was persuaded there was a "realistic prospect of rehabilitation".

Pearson, now of Wykeham Street, Manchester, was handed an eight month sentence suspended for 18 months and ordered to complete the Horizon program.

He was also told to complete 10 Rehabilitation Activity Requirements and must carry out 200 hours of unpaid work.

He must sign the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years and adhere to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for the same period.

Stacey Farrell

A mum-of-four said she dealt cocaine in order to pay off a cannabis drug debt.

Stacey Farrell claimed she began using cannabis to self-medicate after suffering a slipped disc while giving birth.

After becoming reliant on the drug the 33-year-old was caught dealing cocaine from a Mercedes by an officer to pay off a debt she had racked up.

Farrell, of James Holt Avenue, Kirkby, admitted possession with intent to supply cocaine and possession of cannabis.

Farrell, who has no previous convictions, accepted the prosecution case on the basis that she was paying off a £500 drug debt and that the drug user contacts were "supplied to you by a third party".

The court heard she had had a "difficult life" and had been engaging with therapy and addiction support services.

She was handed 16 months in prison suspended for two years and was ordered to carry out 15 Rehabilitation Activity Requirements.

Farrell must adhere to a two month curfew between 8pm and 6am.

Connor Baugh

A young musician who molested a friend as she slept in bed walked free from court.

Connor Baugh's teenage victim woke to find him "breathing heavily" with his hand inside her underpants.

She grabbed his hand, pulled it out and said "no", but said the 17-year-old "put it straight back again".

Baugh later apologised via text, but the victim feared she wouldn't be believed and didn't contact police.

However, when his band started becoming successful, she posted her experience online in a bid to protect female fans.

The now 21-year-old, of Hapsford Road, Litherland, posted an apologetic reply and said he was "very drunk".

A judge said he had "very powerful mitigation" and handed Baugh a 12-month community order with a sex offenders treatment programme, 20-day Rehabilitation Activity Requirement and mental health treatment requirement.

He was ordered to comply with a two-month home curfew from 11pm to 6am daily.

Baugh, who was of previous good character, must sign on the Sex Offenders Register for five years.

Chloe Walsh

Chloe Walsh poured a kettle of boiling sugar water over her neighbour and walked free from court because of her kids.

The mum-of-two left her victim with facial burns after throwing the boiling water over her head on April 27 last year.

Kimberley Caples was unable to nurse her three-month-old baby as a result of her injuries inflicted by the 27-year-old.

Walsh, of Pentland Road, Kirkby, was spared jail after admitting inflicting grievous bodily harm when a court heard heard she is the primary carer for her two children.

A judge said there was "strong personal mitigation" and a "realistic prospect of rehabilitation" and added "a custodial sentence would have a significant harmful impact on others".

Walsh, who has no previous convictions, was handed 18 months suspended for 20 months and ordered to complete 20 Rehabilitation Activity Requirements and 150 hours of unpaid work.

The judge imposed a five year restraining order preventing Walsh from contacting her victim.

Kieran Walsh

A pervert said it was "unfair" when a 14-year-old girl didn't respond to his explicit image by sending one of herself.

The girl said as a result she felt "obliged" to send Kieran Walsh a topless picture.

The 20-year-old also asked a 15-year-old to send a topless photo and told her he "had his penis in his hand and didn't have anything to do with it".

He admitted two counts of engaging in sexual communication with a child which took place between May and September 2019, and possession of three Category C images in October 2019.

A court heard he was "remorseful" had been through a "huge amount" after his mum was diagnosed with an illness in 2018.

A judge handed him a two-year community order after hearing there would be a "massive impact on his mother" if he was jailed.

Walsh was told he must complete the Horizon Programme for sex offenders in that time.

He must also complete 60 Rehabilitation Activity Requirements and 150 hours of unpaid work.

Walsh, of Taunton Road, Wallasey, must sign the Sex Offenders Register for five years and adhere to the terms of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for the same period.

Sarah Ratcliffe

A woman distressed at losing contact with her two sons after their adoption made a "torrent of threats" against an adoption agency in November and December 2019.

Sarah Ratcliffe, who has a previous conviction for holding a public worker at knifepoint, threatened to stab employees of the agency to death and called them “child snatchers.”

She would stab employee, Sharon Redup, “slowly in the eye, then [cut her] fingers off, then stab you in the chest and watch you bleed to death while having so much fun.”

Her graphic threats led to the agency, Together for Adoption, employing a security guard at their Warrington premises after she threatened to turn up with a knife, saying "the first person I see will get stabbed".

The 40-year-old, who has an emotionally unstable personality disorder which leads her to act impulsively, admitted sending malicious electronic communications and making a threat to kill.

She was handed a two year community order after a judge said her mental health had improved and putting her back in prison would hinder her progress.

Ratcliffe, of Britannic Road, Kensington, was told to complete 35 Rehabilitation Activity Requirements and a five year restraining order banned her from contacting the agency.

Andrew Curran

An "angry" man smashed the window of a packed bar after he was kicked out.

Andrew Curran was told to leave The Wro Bar in West Kirby after a brawl broke out on February 28 last year.

The 41-year-old had been drinking in the bar with a friend, who then became involved in a scuffle with another man.

Curran tried to intervene, but a brawl broke out and staff kicked out Curran and his friend at around 11.40pm.

He then began throwing small items at the bar out of "revenge", before launching a stool which smashed the window as people sat inside.

Curran, of Fendale Avenue, Moreton, admitted causing criminal damage.

He was handed a two month sentence suspended for 18 months and was ordered to carry out 140 hours of unpaid work.

He must also pay £1,800 in costs and was banned from The Wro Bar for two years.

Gary Morton

A man left his wife 'pouring with blood' during a family holiday at Gulliver's World Hotel.

Gary Morton was staying with his wife and three children at the hotel, which is part of the Warrington theme park, when he lashed out.

A judge said both Morton and his wife displayed "poor behaviour" when they began drinking after a children's disco on July 31 last year.

Morton, of Highfield Crescent, Pendle, admitted assault causing actual bodily harm.

The judge said there was a "realistic prospect of rehabilitation" and handed Morton a seven month sentence suspended for two years.

He must complete up to 30 days of Rehabilitation Activity Requirements, complete a Skills for Relationship Toolkit course and a Building Better Relationships programme.

Morton, who has no previous convictions, must also pay £400 in costs.
