DUNEDIN, New Zealand -- Neighbors of Brenton Tarrant, the suspect in the New Zealand mosque attacks that claimed the lives of 50 people, said Monday they were shocked as they remembered him being a friendly person.

Tarrant, a 28-year-old Australian, moved to the suburb of Dunedin, a city in New Zealand's South Island, two years ago. Police guards were positioned in front of his apartment there on Monday.

A 34-year-old man who lives near Tarrant's apartment said the suspect used to tell him about his gym visits, and he found it hard to believe Tarrant would have done something so horrifying.

According to the man, Tarrant lived alone and was rarely seen with visitors.

Tarrant was a member of a local rifle club and practiced at a range in Milburn, about 40 kilometers from Dunedin.

Brian Strain, who was playing golf near the range, said he was horrified to find out that Tarrant was a regular at the range.
