DETROIT _ A person who meant to shoot a pit bull that was attacking a woman in a Detroit neighborhood accidentally shot the woman, killing her, police said.
The 53-year-old woman was being attacked on the 9000 block of Goodwin Street, near I-75 and Holbrook, when a neighbor fired at the dog just before 7 p.m. Monday, Detroit police spokesman Officer Dan Donakowski said.
"The first reports were that she was shot in the hip," Donakowski said. "She was taken to a hospital, where she did pass."
Officers who responded to the scene were not able to immediately locate the dog.
"The last I heard, they were still looking for it," Donakowski said late Monday.
The matter remains under investigation.
