This was the moment a horse that slipped on a grassy verge and plunged into an icy river was rescued by firefighters.
Firefighters were called to Churchill Road, Grays, Essex at about 7am on Monday to reports of the stricken mammal.
The animal rescue unit entered the waist-high water and carefully approached the horse.
Firefighters then guided the startled horse in a coat to the edge of the river, using straps.
The animal was then pulled to safety and left in the care of its owners, the fire service said.
The force tweeted images of the daring rescue under the caption: “Firefighters rescued a horse from a river in Grays this morning #NotJustFires”.
