Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra is set to begin his 2026 season at the Doha Diamond League on Friday, marking his return to competition after a long injury layoff.
The Indian javelin star has not competed since the World Championships in September last year after suffering a back injury. Following months of rehabilitation and training, Chopra is now ready to return against a strong international field in Qatar.
The 28-year-old will face stiff competition in the men’s javelin event, which includes reigning world champion Keshorn Walcott, two-time world champion Anderson Peters, and Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage, who recently grabbed attention with a massive 92.62m throw to become the world leader this season.
Doha has been a memorable venue for Chopra, as it was here last year that he crossed the 90m mark for the first time in his career with a throw of 90.23m.
The Doha Diamond League was originally scheduled to be the season opener on May 8 but was postponed due to the West Asia conflict. Chopra was later added to the nine-man field after confirming his fitness following rehabilitation in Türkiye and training in Switzerland since May 25.
The two-time Olympic medallist will be aiming to regain rhythm quickly and start his season strongly despite the long injury break.
