Concern has been expressed after an alleged needle spiking in Omagh last weekend.
Police have confirmed they are investigating the worrying incident, including conducting a review of CCTV footage.
The investigation comes after four cases of drink spiking were reported in the Belfast area in recent weeks, while an awareness campaign has been launched in the Republic of Ireland in response to reports of needle spiking.
“Police in Omagh received a report of a woman who believed she may have been the victim of a needle spiking on Saturday evening (November 5th),” a PSNI statement said.
“A detailed investigation into this incident is underway, including review of CCTV footage.
“We would urge anyone who thinks they have been spiked to contact police as soon as possible so that we can maximise all investigative opportunities.”
Local representatives in Omagh have condemned the report of needle spiking in the area, with one describing it as 'abhorrent'.
Sinn Féin MP for West Tyrone Órfhlaith Begley said she was ‘deeply concerned and quite disturbed’ after hearing the reports.
“I am deeply concerned and quite disturbed by the report that a woman may have been targeted in a needle spiking incident in Omagh at the weekend," she said.
“There has been a rise in reports of spiking in recent weeks throughout the north west which is extremely worrying.
“Women should be able to socialise freely without the fear of having their drinks spiked or being targeted by individuals with syringes containing substances.
“My thoughts are with the woman who has been affected by this traumatic event.
“The recent increase in these incidents also highlights the importance of developing a collaborative approach to tackle this issue as part of the wider strategy for addressing violence against women and girls.”
UUP Omagh councillor Matthew Bell said he was disgusted after learning of the incident.
"I am disgusted to have learnt of a spiking incident that occurred in Omagh over the weekend, spiking is an unacceptable crime which does nothing but seek to harm the victim In an assortment of ways," he said.
"This unfortunately is a trend seemingly increasing throughout the country and I urge people to stay vigilant against this abhorrent crime.
"Everyone should have the right to go out and enjoy themselves without becoming a victim of this practice. If you are aware of any information surrounding this incident or indeed any others I encourage you to pass that information onto the PSNI.”
