BENGALURU: A delegation of 20 leaders from different communities met police commissioner CH Pratap Reddy on Saturday and sought legal action against persons making derogatory statements on religions.
This comes in the backdrop of former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma's alleged communal remarks on Prophet Muhammed. The delegation, led by Maulana Maqsood Imran, chief Imam-Jamia Masjid in the city market, included leaders from Sikh, Jain and Christian communities.
Maqsood Imran said their main contention was the misuse of the ‘freedom of speech’ right. “Be it any religion, god or religious leaders. There are instances where religious leaders and gods are being defamed in the name of freedom of speech. This should be stopped at once. There has to be a legal frame that restrains such nonsense talks and comments,” he said.
Pratap Reddy told STOI that he'll convey the message to the government.
'No protest rallies, will fight legally'
Maqsood Imran said they have decided to fight a legal battle against Nupur Sharma and others. “We have spread a message across Karnataka that no protest rallies should be taken out against Sharma or others as it may disturb social harmony. We have to fight it legally and we will,” he said.
