Nebraska TE Arik Gilbert Arrested for Second Time in Three Weeks

Nebraska tight end Arik Gilbert was arrested Friday in Lumpkin County, Ga., the second time he’s been arrested in the past three weeks. Gilbert was taken into custody on charges of smash-and-grab burglary and obstruction of officers, according to arrest records.

On Aug. 29, Gilbert was arrested in Lancaster County, Nebraska on speculation of burglary after he was found with $1,600 worth of merchandise from a liquor and vape shop in Lincoln, Neb.

The 21-year-old tight end spent his freshman 2020 season at LSU before playing for Georgia last season following a year away due to personal issues. The former five-star recruit transferred to Nebraska after last season, but he has not played this season as he awaits an NCAA waiver to become eligible.

After Gilbert’s first arrest, head coach Matt Rhule acknowledged the off-the-field troubles that Gilbert has faced.

“When we took Arik, we knew we had a good group of people that were going to help him through some of the issues he’s dealing with in his life,” Rhule said last month, via Laura Michelson of KLKN-TV. “During camp, he’s had some struggles. He’s working to overcome them.”

In his college career, Gilbert has played in 11 games and totaled 37 catches for 384 yards and three touchdowns, with most of that production coming with LSU in 2020.
