Nebraska athletic director Trev Alberts gives an update on Memorial Stadium renovations Thursday, Sept. 28, 2023, in Lincoln, Neb. Texas A&M is close to hiring Nebraska's Trev Alberts as

Nebraska football coach Matt Rhule took the opportunity during a pre-spring football practice news conference to address the Cornhuskers' fan base following the recent departure of athletic director Trev Alberts. Rhule, who has been at the university for 16 months, expressed surprise and disappointment over the exits of both Alberts and former university president Ted Carter.

Rhule, who is entering his second year of an eight-year, $74 million contract, emphasized his commitment to the University of Nebraska and reassured fans that he and his wife are fully invested in the program. Despite the leadership changes, Rhule remains steadfast in his dedication to the university and its athletic programs.

With Nebraska now in search of its fourth athletic director since 2013, interim president Chris Kabourek is leading the search process. Meanwhile, Dennis Leblanc is serving as the interim executive associate athletic director for academics.

Alberts, a former All-America football player for the Cornhuskers, departed from his role as athletic director after less than three years. While specific reasons for his departure were not disclosed, Rhule commended Alberts for his forthrightness during their conversation and refrained from commenting on Alberts' personal reasons for leaving.

Despite the recent challenges faced by the football program, Rhule urged fans to remember Nebraska's storied history and strong reputation in college athletics. He highlighted the university's financial self-sufficiency and its pioneering efforts in academic support, strength training, nutrition, and name, image, and likeness initiatives.

Rhule emphasized the importance of investing in the program to achieve success in college athletics, citing the state of Nebraska's deep understanding of the value of investment. He called for a return to the days when the University of Nebraska was a beacon of excellence that attracted attention from across the country.

As the Cornhuskers navigate through this period of transition, Rhule's message to the fan base is one of resilience, unity, and a shared commitment to building a successful future for Nebraska athletics.
