Nebraska tight ends coach Bob Wager has resigned after he received a DUI citation earlier this week, the school announced Friday.
According to Lincoln, Neb. police, Wager was stopped by officers just before 1:30 a.m. local time Wednesday and was cited for having blood-alcohol content of 0.15 or higher, refusal of a preliminary breath test, refusal of chemical test and having an open container.
“It is with great remorse that I resign from my position as assistant football coach at the University of Nebraska,” Wager said in a statement Friday. “Earlier this week I received a citation for a driving offense that I regret immensely. I am grateful for the opportunity extended to me, and sincerely sorry for any negativity my poor decision has brought to my family, our team, our staff, and all those I have disappointed.”
Wager joined Matt Rhule’s staff ahead of the 2023 season after 17 years as the head coach at Arlington (Texas) Martin High School. He led the program to the playoffs in each of his 17 seasons at the helm and won 210 games—a school record.
In Friday’s release, Nebraska named Josh Martin as Wager’s replacement. Martin was on the Cornhuskers staff as a special teams analyst but previously coached tight ends at SMU and Arizona State.
