Nearly half of Glaswegians feel 'ripped off' by their broadband provider as bills soar

Nearly half of Glaswegians feel 'ripped off' by their broadband provider, according to a recent survey.

The nationwide survey found that 40 per cent of Scots believe that they are being overcharged and underserved by their provider with four in five (80 per cent) of the mindset that their provider should be legally obligated to give customer the best deal possible.

The research was conducted by Glasgow-based internet service provider Brillband, who are set to launch this month and comes as people are seeing their bills rise.

Broadband rates this year have been driven by as much as 11 per cent having been driven by inflation with popular providers such as BT, Plusnet and Vodafone charging premiums to customers who wish to leave their contracts early.

The research has laid bare the feeling of discontent among broadband customers across Scotland, with Brillband founder Duncan di Biase accusing major providers of “exploiting vulnerable households” as costs spiral.

He said: “For too long, the major broadband players have overcharged and underserved their customers, driven by an agenda based solely on greed.

“The reality is there is no need for high-speed broadband to be that expensive. Now more than ever before, customers deserve to be safe in the knowledge that their broadband providers are striving to give them the best possible deals.

“We believe in giving customers the best possible service at the best rates. That’s why we only charge one, fixed price for the maximum speed possible for as long as you’re with us. That’s the way it should be – and should always be.”

Dubbed the “Starling bank for the broadband industry”, Brillband is set to launch its network this month, providing customers with a fixed-rate tariff of £35 per month for an ultra-fast 900MB connection.
